James E. Walters currently serves as the Administrative Sergeant of the Dade City Police Department, a position he has held since 2003. In this capacity he oversees multiple divisions of the Department, including the Criminal Investigation section (CID) consisting of detectives, crime scene technician, and crime analyst; school resource officer (SRO) program; K-9 unit; training section; research and development section; and professional standards. The Administrative Sergeant is also third in command of the Department.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, James started with the City of Dade City Police Department in 1995. He worked as a patrol officer until a transfer to CID as a Community Oriented Policing (COP) Detective in April 1997. James was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in April 1999 and to Detective Sergeant in April 2000, a position he held until promotion to his current position of Administrative Sergeant in 2003.

Sergeant Walters completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Criminology from Saint Leo College in 1994, and earned his Master of Science (MS) degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Saint Leo University in 2006. He holds a Certified Instructor ranking, in both General and High Liability areas, from the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, as well as certifications in numerous areas, including such specialties as firearms, investigations, field training, crisis intervention, line supervision, middle management, and police internal affairs. Additionally, James is an Adjunct Instructor at Pasco Hernando Community College (PHCC), and Adjunct Faculty at Saint Leo University in the Criminal Justice Department.

James has received numerous decorations and awards during his tenure with the Dade City Police Department, including a Unit Citation, Community Service Award, Education Ribbons, Hazardous Incident Team, and the Chief’s Award. He has been named employee of the month, elected to the Dade City Police Retirement Board, is a member of the YMCA Advisory Board, and the PHCC Law Enforcement Academy Advisory Board.
